Why I know you can do it. (+ what I’m doing in 2012!)

Hey guys!

So, I’m gonna keep this short and sweet.. Ish.

I’m going to tell you why I know that no matter what your goals are.. You can do it in 2012. I know you can. And I’m a pretty smart cookie, if I do say so myself.

Let’s start with a picture..

Last day of high school. With my cat.

Yupp, that’s me. Three years ago. Shocking, right? That was my life for the majority of my life.. Overweight, awkward, unhappy. Hating myself and not knowing the way out.

Sure, I had friends in high school. A great group of friends. And, I was “the smart girl”. People liked me. I was nice. But, other people don’t make you happy all the time.. You have to love yourself to make yourself happy all the time.

At my heaviest, I estimate I weighed about 205 lbs. That’s a BMI of 33ish. That’s obese. Scary, right?

Sure, I had a lot of excuses, and I made those excuses all the time. I would tell myself that I “carried the weight well” or that “I had a large frame”. Uhhh.. There becomes a point where excuses don’t matter. And that’s where I was.

I graduated high school before finding myself. And in college, I made a change. And surprisingly, it was pretty damn easy to make that change.. Even though it was scary to commit to.

I was out on my own, and didn’t have my comfort home food anymore. My mom wasn’t there to cook for me. I was forced to eat things that I’d never before. And I decided to join the riding team (I rode A LOT as a kid and notsomuch in high school).

First time coming home since starting my journey..

Magically.. I changed my life. Completely. The weight came off by itself.

Big change, huh? Midway through the journey, on my pony Pippin. (Yes, that is my horse!!)

I realized that there was more to life than I thought before. I got happier. I started going to the gym even! And.. I enjoyed it? What? A couple of years later, I started playing rugby and (as I result) running.. I used to hate sports and running. And now, I loved it! What??!!?

Okay.. I kinda miss not getting massive concussions from a full contact sport. This was after my first game! Haha. I collided with someone while we were trying to tackle the same person. I had that egg on my head for a week! And, I gave my teammate (now best friend) a scar.

A total of two and a half years later, I’m planning a half marathon. And I’m the captain of the riding team. Yeah, two and a half years is a long time. But, changing your lifestyle is a permanent thing that you can do. That’s what I did, and I think that the new year is a perfect time to do it. Make a little change, and it could go a long way.

So, when you look at your resolutions this year, YOU CAN DO IT. I know you can. 2009 was the year when I made the big change, and now it’s almost 2012 and I’ve come a Hell of a long way. Will 2012 be your year?

2012 will be my year to..

Run my first race

Run a half marathon (and maybe a full??)

Improve my times and endurance

Be the best equestrian team captain I can be

Do my first three-day event

Play a new position in rugby

HAPPY NEW YEAR’S EVE GUYS!

Five Friday Faves! (LAST of 2011!)

Hey guys!

It’s FRIIIIIDAY. Wahoo! Not like it matters for me, because I’m on break.. But whatever. The knowledge that it is in fact almost officially the weekend still gives me a little jumpstart to happiness for the day.

What does Friday mean? Friday means it’s time to talk about my FAAAAAAVES. Five of them, to be precise. Some days, coming up with five is an ambitious goal.. Some days, it’s wayyyy too little. It’s one of those days.

Probably because I’ve skipped Friday Faves twice in a row. Oh well. ONTO THEM!

1. Proper recovery.

Okay, so as a runner with a busy schedule at school, I often ignore recovery after runs as a priority. BAD. But, at home? I’m totally into recovery. The second I get home from a run, there is stretching, then slipping on my brand new compression sleeves.. And uggs.

Keepin’ it classy, you know.

Then? A giant bowl of oatmeal is made.

Yesterday’s oatmeal.. Vanilla with chocolate sauce? Nom.
Another recent oatmeal.. Gingerbread!

Afterwards, it’s chillaxin’ on the couch all day.. I’m really lazy when I’m not running.

2. Felix.

Obsessed. I know it’s weird.

He’s my new boyfriend. A Garmin Forerunner 450CX. I have a serious problem.

3. Cupcakes.

Gluten free chocolate cherry cupcakes.

So.. Yesterday, I wanted cupcakes. So.. Yesterday, I made cupcakes. So.. Yesterday, I ate cupcakes. Recipe soon!

Cupcake on greek yogurt. Latenight snack perfection!

4. Celestial Seasonings holiday tea.

I love the boxes. They’re so festive! 🙂

Now that it’s after Christmas, all of the delicious holiday tea is on sale. My favourite is Sugar Cookie Sleigh Ride or Nutcracker Sweet. My mom got two boxes for 3 bucks the other day! What a steal.

5. Pea snacks.

My new love.

Okay, so I’m obsessed with wisabi peas. But, my mom’s friend introduced me to these Japanese pea snacks.. They’re delicious. I want them. I crave them. I need them. They’re crunchy, salty, and slightly peppery.. TO DIE FOR.

Now, I’m contemplating mixing them and wasabi peas for ultimate perfection.

WIAW Numbah TWO!

Hey friends!

I liked WIAW last week.

..Today, I decided to do it again.

I think I’m hooked.

(PS, this is not what I ate in a day.. Just the things I remembered to take pictures of.)

So, here we go!

breakfast + snack all day.

Off brand rice krispies.. SHWEET. Handfuls of these are shoved into my trap all the time.

post-workout oatmeal. necessary.

Oatmeal + greek yogurt + butterscotch pudding mix.. Topped with maple syrup (still obsessed, aka Buddy the Elf) and almond butter.

tea time!

Holiday tea (nutcracker something??) in a mason jar, 'cause I'm classy like that.. and we only have smallish mugs.

breakfast for dinner??

GIANT egg scramble with spinach, yellow pepper, and onions. Later topped with nooch and KETCHUP.

dessert.

Cottage cheese + pumpkin + almond milk + cheesecake jello mix..

..in a puffin mug..

..topped with chocolate.

nighttime snack.

Rice cake with almond butter and honey. 🙂

I also had.. chocolate, nuts, and grabby snack things like that. I’m notorious for grazing. Especially on WASABI PEAS.

Clears the sinuses. SO GOOD.

I took Felix (new Garmin) out to the gym-bo today. It was raining like NONE OTHER, so I didn’t feel like going outisde. I intended on doing a not-long run (4-5 miles).. But I ended up doing 7 with intervals. Then I lifted a little bit and stretched A LOT because my mom left me at the gym while she went grocery shopping. ROOD.

Max HR 168, Avg HR 155, 7 miles, Avg pace 10:10.

I also figured I’d track my heartrate while lifting and stretching and shizz, so this is what I got. I don’t know if this is a proper use of a Garmin, but it works for me, lolz.

Max HR 136, Avg HR 117.

Anyways, that was my second WIAW! Hope you guys enjoyed. 🙂
